Alternate Cover Letter

You only have so much time to catch attention... though this version is more crammed. Its already at 10 point text, and 9 point wouldn't kill anyone, but its definitely hitting the lower limits of type size. I do like that the business card is in place of the signature until you remove it. Thanks Wendi.

Self Promo

I have been updating my self promotion material to send to employers. It includes a personalized envelope, cd case cover, cover letter, business card, and cd label. The cd has my resume and Electronic Portfolio on it. If you have a moment I need feedback on it... I've been looking at it for too long. But I am pretty satisfied with the upgrade. I think it will help out substantially in the long run.

The biggest question I have is about the cover letter. It greets them personally with a big Hello, but you have to flip it over to read the actual letter. Does this seem like the most natural solution?

Again, any feedback I can get would be amazing. Thanks!

Anatomy Class

I have been trying to learn anatomy in a detailed fashion to be able to construct the figure from imagination. It will be a pretty big task, but a huge pay-off. I am starting from the ground up, using Rubin's Anatomy for Artists. I am beginning with more "medical" type strict drawings, and moving out to more expressive and dynamic posing and foreshortening.

I am starting with the skeleton. I started at the rib cage and moved out to the pelvis and skull. I ended with the limbs, and started putting it all together. The pelvis has been the most difficult, as its shape is pretty difficult to grasp for the purpose of memorization.

I'm going to start working on moving my blog over to my actual domain. I will have considerable more control (I hate that I can't lay things out properly on here...) and will be going into more depth. If that happens I will keep this blog up for reference for a while, but will eventually remove it and provide a link to the new domain blog.

I got a skull for some studies on anatomy, and decided to do a full rendering. This is the first Drawing Proper I have done in a while. It felt good to be meticulous. The scanner I've been using at work always comes out too white though, and misses a lot of subtlety in the tones. But I am still pretty satisfied with it.

Christmas Stuff

I haven't updated in a while, but not for lack of material. I put together some Christmas presents this year for people, and its what the majority of my creative work has been working towards. I am working on learning anatomy now, but that is another post.

The first piece here is the Rifleman's Creed for my marine brother-in-law. The whole thing is there in order, though you probably can't see it all at internet size.

The second is a "portrait" of my friend's husband, who has some inside-joke connections to Superman.

The last five are my Christmas cards this year. There were 3 variations, with the first image being the cover, the next three being the various insides, and the final being the back where I wrote my jolly Christmas message. The theme is how kids like to take all the mundane leftovers of Christmas and turn them into toys and let their imaginations take over.

I should really update in streams, rather than in big chunks. But formatting the pictures to put on here one at a time is really a pain in the butt.

This is the latest stuff I've been doing. Trying to get away from pencil for everything but not ready to start painting yet. So I've been using brush pen to ink my drawings. Its gotten me out of a rut, which is good. I needed to get out of my rut, according to the life coach I drew to really encourage myself.

I made a very bad drawing the other day, so I felt I needed to do an academic painting of shiny metal. Its a cast painting, or a black and white painting used solely for the purpose of a value study. I actually took screenshots as a went along, the first at 1.5 hours, the second at 2.5, and the final which took 3.5 hours, give or take.

Adam had me watch Afro Samurai recently, and I was pretty impressed. My two favorite parts were the title sequence and the character Kuma, who is basically like Darth Vader except with a teddy bear head instead of a nazi helmet. This is him at the end of the film, covered in headbands of the men he's killed. Love the design of it...

Juried Student Show Piece

The first painting here is the old Blue Girl, done in my Watercolor II class a long time ago. I decided to make a painting that matched her somewhat, so I made the second painting over the last few days, and named her Blue Two. Very original, I know.

Today were the submissions for studio art pieces for the OSU Juried Student Show. I didn't have any work that I felt was ready to submit, so I started Blue Two on Tuesday and worked until 7 am this morning finishing it up for submission.

Creative Drought

I'm feeling like all of my creative juices are stagnating, so I made this post to encourage myself. Three different things, the first of which are some book illustrations for my senior show. They are an imaginary book published by the Discovery Channel to explain the names of groups of animals - the two shown are a Knot of Toads and a Rafter of Turkeys. I'm trying to use visual puns to implant the names in the readers' minds. The Knot of Toads illustration is finished (except for a catchy poem-like explanation) and the Rafter of Turkeys is still in sketch format. The little blobs down below are turkeys who have a fireman's trampoline to save the turkey in the rafters.

The other two posts are some random recent drawings, and then my first sculpture from Sculpture 1.

My first sculpture for my Sculpture 1 class. Finished and pre-paint pictures, respectively. The idea is to be simultaneously 3 designs - weapon, creature, and vehicle. The vehicle version is a jet. The creature is a manta-ray type creature, but who is blind and senses its surroundings with the processes sticking off of the spine. The weapon design is heard to describe in words (I plan to make a diagram for the sketchbook I have to turn in) But basically, the base wraps around the forearm and the tip protrudes out, similar to a wrist sword. The base acts as a small buckler-type shield to parry away attacks and quickly counter attack with the tip. You could feasibly wear two for a crazy pair of weapons.

Be sure to look at the Lancer again in this post, the skewing that haunted it so badly before is gone. I didn't notice how bad it was skewed at 5 in the morning after I finished the thing. The other work from this class includes the etched glasses and the Judge, so I might add photos of those later on. Enjoy

okay these are a little difficult to explain. these follow my abstract watercolors that i've posted before. i started putting them on glasses and found that the extra layers add a lot to the style and can do some very interesting things. so i made one for my sister and brother in law (wine glass and beer pilsner respectively). his is supposed to vaguely resemble the marine symbol/logo and hers is a bit more vague - an infinite cross with wings. however, the two sides of the glass make up the image and viewed from the side take on different shapes. if this makes absolutely no sense to you im sure you're not alone, haha.
